Question:
I feel like my ideas aren’t heard by the team, so I don’t get credit for them. How can I get my ideas heard and get the credit I deserve?
Answer
Start by testing your belief that your ideas aren’t being heard. After a team meeting where you felt you weren’t heard, check in with a trusted colleague who was also in the meeting. Ask whether they heard you put forward your idea and how the team reacted to it. Before trying to solve the problem, be sure to understand whether you are literally not being heard (true for some soft-spoken people), or whether you’re being heard but not getting the reaction and credit you expect. Be sure that your comments are relevant and solution-focused. Back up your point by briefly sharing the business case for your idea. Are you being interrupted while making your point? Politely say that you’d like to finish, then do so. A coach can help you build the skills to be heard and get credit for your work.
