Featured Question:

I feel like I’m drowning between email, voice mail, 24/7, and global demands. How do I get out from underneath all this?

Answer

Today’s leaders have more demands on their time than ever before, so it is imperative that you set limits and priorities - and then stick to them. It generally makes more sense to start with priorities. I like Stephen Covey’s matrix, where he divides the universe of activities into four boxes: 1)Important and Urgent; 2)Important, but not Urgent; 3)Urgent, but Not Important; 4)Not Important and Not Urgent. So list your daily/weekly/sporadic activities under one of those headings. Most people spend too much time attending to the Urgent tasks, both important and not important. The most neglected category is often the “Not Urgent, but Important”. Spending more time in the “Not Urgent, but Important” and less time on the “Urgent and Not Important” will help you feel better about what you do with your time. Set limits on your time in accordance with what is important in your life. Family time and sleep time are two of the most critical elements for a productive and rewarding life. Set limits on when you will attend to work tasks and when yo will nurture your social, family, and personal needs. Then stick to them as though your life depends on it.
